A battery with a capacity of one kilowatt-hour that cost $7500 in 1991 was just $181 in 2018.
For battery electric vehicle (BEV) packs, prices were $128/kWh on a volume-weighted average basis in 2023. At the cell level, average prices for BEVs were just $89/kWh. This indicates that on average, cells account for 78% of the total pack price. Over the last four years, the cell-to-pack cost ratio has risen from the traditional 70:30 split.
The figures represent an average across multiple battery end-uses, including different types of electric vehicles, buses and stationary storage projects. Prices for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) came in at $97/kWh, crossing below the $100/kWh threshold for the first time.
Installation and permitting fees vary by location and installer, but the NREL cost estimate for the standalone battery is $16,007. Solar incentives and rebates are available to reduce the cost of a solar system, including solar storage.
Global average battery prices declined from $153 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2022 to $149 in 2023, and they're projected by Goldman Sachs Research to fall to $111 by the close of this year.
