Learn MoreChanges to Brazil's first capacity reserve auction of 2025 could undermine the expansion of the procurement regime to include battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the second exercise of the year, according to Markus Vlasits, chairman of Brazil's energy storage trade body.
Brazil's first-ever auction to add batteries and storage systems to its national power grid, scheduled for later this year, is seen generating $450 million in investments, according to an estimate by consultancy firm Oliver Wyman.
Brazil's transmission system operator, ISA CTEEP, has announced that the country's first large-scale battery has been connected to the grid at one of its electrical substations in Sao Paulo. The company said the battery spans approximately 5,000 square meters and relies on 180 lithium battery modules made by an undisclosed manufacturer in China.
The country's total power generation capacity – including all sources – currently stands at roughly 161 GW, which means that hydropower covers more than half of total national energy demand. However, this is affected by the fact that at Brazil's existing hydropower facilities, underproduction stands at approximately 12 GW.
From pv magazine LatAm Brazil's transmission system operator, ISA CTEEP, has announced that the country's first large-scale battery has been connected to the grid at one of its electrical substations in Sao Paulo.
Batteries can only be imported to Brazil upon approval from INMETRO, but IBAMA, Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis, which is Portuguese for Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources, may also be involved in this process.
