Learn MoreChina's Solar Megaproject: The 'Solar Great Wall' to Power Beijing by 2030! China embarks on an ambitious journey to power its capital with clean energy by constructing a massive solar farm extending through Inner Mongolia's sunny Kubuqi Desert, a project coined as the 'Solar Great Wall'.
This effort is part of China's ambitious plan to construct a “ solar great wall,” aimed at generating enough energy to power Beijing. Slated for completion in 2030, the project will span 400 kilometers (250 miles) in length and 5 kilometers (3 miles) in width, with a planned maximum capacity of 100 gigawatts.
The project's primary objective is to construct a massive solar farm capable of generating a staggering 100 gigawatts of power by the year 2030, which is expected to supply sufficient electricity to power the bustling city of Beijing.
China is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a massive solar farm in the Kubuqi Desert, Inner Mongolia, aiming to create what is being dubbed as the "solar great wall" by the year 2030.
The new solar project will far exceed the annual power generation of what today is currently the world's largest solar farm, also in China, which has a capacity of just over 6 billion kWh per year. Sandy and mostly devoid of life, the Kubuqi Desert once had a reputation for being a “sea of death.”
An area of 10.7 square kilometers (4.1 square miles) around the Junma Solar Power Station have been reclaimed. While it is true that China's total carbon emissions are the highest of any nation, on a per capita basis they are only slightly higher than those of the United States. China is making monumental strides on a path to 100% renewable energy.
