To remove the old motor, first remove the large capacitor strapped to the side of the fan housing. Note: Capacitors store energy. To avoid getting a shock, short the 2 posts on the top of the capacitor by placing a plastic-handled screwdriver across both simultaneously, where the metal of the screwdriver touches both posts, and you only touch the plastic handle.

The purpose of the resistor is to bleed off residual voltage in the capacitor after it has been disconnected from the circuit after motor start up. Not all start capacitors will use one, as there are other ways to accomplish this. The important part is if your original capacitor had one, you''ll need to replace it on the new capacitor.

Fortunately, they can be pretty easy to replace. A motor-run capacitor is used on many single-phase motors such as refrigerators and washing machines and overhead fans. They require a special kind of capacitor to keep them going; if the capacitor fails, the motor won''t run. Fortunately, I had ordered a couple replacement caps for another reel-to-reel that I have, and I

The lifting motor is an essential part of the electric overhead crane. The threephase AC asynchronous motor - (hereinafter referred as motor) is usually used as lifting motor. One of the fundamental parts of designing process of the lifting motor is to design a suitable motor power with regard to the maximum capacity of the overhead crane. Therefore, the design of the lifting
Learn MoreThe normal technique to remove the motor capacitor is to remove the top panel, back panel and also take out the drum too. However, on this particular model there is a much easier technique. This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.
If your motor cannot be turned manually after you removed it from the lift, it's “done” and it needs to be replaced. You can troubleshoot the motor while it's not on the lift by checking its gearbox for problems (it could be stuck). Drum switch problems?
Before removing a start capacitor, don't forget to short it out by touching both terminals with a screw or nut driver (with a plastic or rubber handle). Be very careful and for more protection use gloves. Shorting could create an arc or a spark, so don't have anything flammable nearby. Once discharged, now you can remove the wires.
In general, capacitors fail when the motor starting relay gets stuck closed for a longer period of time than it should. If the capacitor gets overheated or has an internal short (due to moisture buildup, for example), you will need to replace it.
If you try to spin the shaft yourself and it starts working, the problem is most likely to be the start capacitor. Make sure that you DON'T spin the motor with your hands (you can try spinning the motor fan with a stick)! Here is a good video on troubleshooting a start capacitor and centrifugal switch:
When troubleshooting your boat lift motor and it just doesn't start, make sure that electricity can actually get to it! The most common reasons behind your motor not getting any power, are flipped breakers (or GFCI) and damaged wires.
