SAIC-GM-Wuling announced today that it saw its first power battery produced in Indonesia roll off the production line, becoming the first Chinese auto brand to realize power battery production in Indonesia. Wuling called the battery Magic Battery, saying the project took only 4 months and a half from startup to production.
Many Chinese players, including BYD, CATL, Gotion, and EVE, plan to increase capacity in countries like India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The urgent need for increased battery cell manufacturing capacity arises due to the surging demand for EVs.
“Currently, the global production of Li-ion batteries is predominantly led by Asian companies, with China holding a 57% market share, followed by South Korea (25%) and Japan (7%),” asserts Shalu Agarwal.
More than 90 percent of the main starting materials of a battery cell (i.e. anode, cathode, separator and electrolyte) come from these three countries. In recent years, the battery industry has established itself mainly in Asia, so that the material manufacturers there have entered the supplier market.
Europe and the USA face cost disadvantages in the EV battery industry compared to China, mainly due to higher manufacturing costs. This cost discrepancy is linked to lower material costs in China, driven by advanced supply chains with vertical integration of material supply, processing, and manufacturing.
