Some use mechanical-type TRP products that are bolted into the battery, others place TRP materials under the battery pack housing lid, while others engineer TRP solutions between battery cells or modules.
To do so, battery compression pads are typically used. In most commonly adapted battery chemistries for EVs, two types of physical dimension changes occur in the battery due to the electrochemical reaction occurring in the batteries.
Battery cells are the most basic units that store energy for hybrid vehicles and EVs. There are three types of battery cells that can be used in EVs: cylindrical, prismatic and pouch. Each battery cell has an anode and a cathode that are separated from each other, but the implementation is different in each cell type.
Individual materials have been developed to mitigate the potential for thermal propagation, but — as with any non-cell material — incorporating them into EV battery construction diminishes the energy density of the pack.
Liquid cold plates – Similar to our solutions for the module level, Boyd develops liquid cold plate solutions optimal for EV battery packs. Cold plates can be laminated with dielectrically insulating tapes to provide electrical protection and strong bonds with other assembled components.
Battery pad cushions, or compression pads, are used inside an EV pouch cell battery pack. They must be firm enough to hold components in place and compressible enough to withstand dimensional changes to the pouch cells over the life of the battery. Batteries also need to be packaged to absorb internal impact energy.
