RecycLiCo is among the first to be able to turn that black mass into “black gold,” recovering almost all of the cathode materials within black mass and upcycling them into battery-grade precursor cathode active material (pCAM) and lithium that can be used again in the battery manufacturing process. The aluminium is recycled by Norsk Hydro, while the "black mass" powder is sold to battery makers. "This is the black gold that gives us life", said Glenn Ostbye, the acting head of Hydrovolt, leading a tour of the plant clad.
