With the advent of battery-powered electric cars, building solar-powered cars have become more challenging. They have moved to a startup level, where engineers have begun to build improved and more real-life-looking prototypes of solar cars. Companies like Light Year have plans to roll out limited-edition vehicles powered only by the Sun.
Most solar powered cars are electric, but the electric energy is supplemented by solar panels, so that when these panels with photovoltaic cells are hit by photons from the sun, their electrons reach an excited state and flow through the array as an electric current.
To use solar energy in a car, you can experiment with different designs and configurations to determine the most efficient use of the solar energy. Use the solar panels to charge the battery, which can then power the motor. Hot glue works well to connect parts of the car together. Use the battery holder to test your car or for use on a cloudy day. The smallest gear or pulley can be pressed onto the axle of the motor.
The solar module on the car occupies an area of 87 square feet (8.1 sq.m), far more than we have seen in any other solar vehicle. On sunny days, this can deliver a maximum energy output of 7.6kWh. Additionally, the vehicle is also equipped with a battery with an energy storage density of 330 Wh/kg.
The top speed of a solar car is 120 km/h. The team SolarMobil from the Manipal University (MAHE) built a prototype 2-seater solar passenger car called 'SERVe' in 2015. The range with solar charging only is up to 600 kilometers per day, and the range with a fully charged accumulator (14,8 kWh) is up to 1100 kilometers.
