When the solenoid is energized in a direct acting valve, the core directly opens the orifice of a Normally Closed valve or closes the orifice of a Normally Open valve. When de-energized, a spring returns the valve to its original position. The valve will operate at pressures from 0 psi to its rated maximum.
The main difference between direct acting and pilot solenoids is that direct-acting solenoid valves have a direct connection with the opening and closing armature, whereas pilot-operated valves employ the use of the process fluid to assist in piloting the operation of the valve. Both types of solenoid valve have their particular merits.
Internally piloted solenoid valves are fitted with either a 2- or 3-way pilot solenoid valve. A diaphragm or a piston provides the seal for the main valve seat. The operation of such a valve is indicated in Fig. 4. When the pilot valve is closed, the fluid pressure builds up on both sides of the diaphragm via a bleed orifice.
Direct Acting Solenoid Valves use armature movement to control the opening and closing of a solenoid valve. The solenoid plunger seal assembly directly opens or closes the orifice. The ability of the valve to restrict or allow the flow of a given media depends on the rated power of the device.
Solenoid valves are electromechanical devices that feature two major components: a valve body (G) and a solenoid (Figure 1). The solenoid is an electric coil (A) with a movable magnetic core that's centrally located, also called a plunger (E). It's also made up of an armature (B), a shading ring (C), a spring (D), and a seal (F).
